Creating the Urban Structure

Urban Structure is the elements which make up a place – blocks, streets, buildings, open space and landscape – and how they fit together. It applies equally to all places - to the centre and the suburb and everything in-between and to the city, town and the village.

Urban structure is important because it provides the foundations for the detailed design of individual developments enabling;

  • Integration with surrounding area
  • Individual elements to function efficiently together
  • Environmental harmony
  • A sense of place
  • Commercial viability
