Urban Design Frameworks

Urban Design Frameworks set out how planning and design policies and principles should be implemented in an area. They can help to co-ordinate development over a wide area, bringing together more detailed masterplans, design codes and site briefs.

  • Urban Design Framework – sets out key development principles for an area which may comprise a number of sites in different ownership with different delivery timeframes. Should provide flexibility for subsequent masterplans to develop ideas in greater precision
  • Masterplan – sets out intended layout of an area on a detailed three dimensional plan. It present proposals for buildings, spaces, movement and land use and should be accompanied by an implementation strategy.
  • Design Code – sets out detailed design rules for the physical development of a site based on the masterplan
  • Site Brief – sets out specific requirements for each site

Frameworks should be developed collaboratively to ensure it is deliverable. They should consider each of the key principles of urban design

Frameworks are particularly effective in providing confidence that development in a wide area is being co-ordinated towards a common goal.
