Community
Hosting an Action Planning Day during the initial phase of the Brixham Harbour Regeneration Project ensured design ideas were based on a thorough appreciation of the views of local people.
A successful project must consider human as well as physical geography. This requires an understanding of the local people, in particular:
- Local views and initiatives
- Local history and custom
- The views of stakeholder groups and individuals
- Organisational or institutional arrangements
- The policy context.
A good understanding of the local community and the social dynamics of a place can be achieved through an inclusive public participation strategy.
By involving a wide range of local interest groups and individuals in the process design can be used to negotiate trade-offs between different interest groups and secure mutually compatible solutions.
